ZF 22 torque converter fitment issues

I am swapping a 3.5 from a RR with a 3.9 from a later disco. The connections between the torque converter and flywheel are a bit different so I need to use the torque converter that was with the 3.9. The GB side of the torque converters look the same to me. I am having untold problems getting the torque converter onto the input shaft of the gearbox (including one trip to hospital emergency with a cut up finger). I can get it almost on but I think it's the pump lugs that I cannot get to mesh with the large cutouts in the shaft. Am I doing something completely wrong? Is there a special method to match them up or am I just uncoordinated?
    Thanks.

I've only done a 300tdi one but assuming its the same.

There wasn't anything special, but it did take a bit of stuffing around to get it engaged properly. I made the mistake of thinking it was properly engaged, offering the trans/converter up to the engine and then finding that it wasn't.
With the converter bolts removed it finally clunked into place after rotating it a few revolutions via the starter motor opening.

Just dont try and pull the trans into the engine with the bellhousing bolts as apparently it can damage/break the oil pump if the drive tang isn't in.

Assuming you've got similar access to the flex plate bolts as a 300tdi has, the best way might be to remove the engine out of the way make sure the torque converter is in the trans properly, then fit the engine and bolt the flex plate up.Thats assuming that you've left the trans in the car and are just trying fit the engine to it.
If its the other way around (engine in place and fitting trans) then drop the trans back out, locate the converter properly and go from there.
