Yep, my ST's broke side lugs. They said as soon as you hit dirt then drop to 20psi. Did that, lost more lugs. They said missing lugs are ok, not a roadworthy item. I wrote and asked if they will be accepting liability if I crash, they replaced the tyres pro-rata with STT's. I think the ST will tolerate dirt roads, but it wont tolerate anything that challenges them where even minimal wheelslip occurs - which is so common when 4WDing. The delamination of them is another issue. Personally, I would always sidestep them, and their technical sharing with Mickey Thompson is also why I have never bought Mickey tyres despite being manufactured in different plants. Just my opinion on them even if others disagree.

Exactly,had BFG's for the last 10yrs,on two different D2's,never even had a flat tyre,been fantastic.Two long cape trips,deserttrips,etc,etc.
May cost a few dollars more,but WELL worth it in the long run.

I just put Goodyears on the missus' Prado, and I'll be putting BFG MTs on the Defender shortly.

I do believe that they are the two leading tyres at this stage on the market.

Hi, I am running Maxxis Bighorns, been on D1 now for 7 months approx. including 4500 road trip (magority bitumen) hardly any sign of wear.
Also Fluids it is not a good idea to only fit two tyres at a time on a constant 4x4 as it could wind up the transfercase due th difference in the rolling diameter of the tyres.(older tyre will spin more than new tyre)

Its always gonna be a hard question for a young (new) 4x4 driver what is good for what i want but what will not waste my money, and tyres you never seem to have a wrong answer we all drive in differant areas and so many other factors that can change the out come for any mod you can think of in the same cars.

Looking at all my options I think i will go for the KM2's I like the patern they look good sound well on the road and I have seen the MTR's (fitted to dads D1) walk up hills with its eyes closed and still look new after clumbing up the rockest hills of the Vic highcountry time and time

but how can you find better with out trying others to see first hand.

I had the KL71's on my classic rangie when the tyres were first released. They are a directional tyre which some don't like. I found them to be great in all conditions although they seemed to wear reasonably quickly. I have no idea how many km's I got out of them, but sold them on with a reasonable amount of tread. The only reason I changed was setting up for the Cape Trip and found a set of MTZ's at the right price otherwise I'd probably still have them.

I have recently bought a Deefer, previous I had a 02 Rodeo set up for long distance travel ( Tassie to NW WA ), I had a aluminium canopy on the back with a large roof top tent, 200 litres of fuel, 200 litres of water, spares, surfing gear, fridge, food etc. All up an extra 800 kg, too much I know! My wife and I clocked up 40,000kms of travel on out back roads over the course of a year and our Cooper ST tyres didn't have any troubles, not one puncture, no chipping.
When we got to Gnaraloo station the road was a quagmire and with 22 psi the coopers got us through no worries. IMO the Cooper ST is a great tyre, or maybe were lucky!
The Deefer might get a set of the ST Maxx, anyone got these?

Not so with centre diff unlocked

I have had a very good run out of both Maxxis Bighorns and MTRs. I have a set of each with over 60k km on and they are not worn out. The bighorns have probably done closer to 80k km, but my ODO is broken at the moment so I can't know for sure...

The bighorns have done the CSR, gibb river, the nullarbor 4 times, etc, etc...

The MTRs have done lots of difficult offroading on the east and west coast, the high country, nullarbor, etc. The MTRs have plenty of chunks removed and rounded lugs from offroading, but comparatively low wear.

Old tyres less than 1/2 worn when new fronts fitted ... due to old fronts (1x) scrubbed badly from poor wheel alignment ... best 2x of remaining 3x fitted to rear, and remainder on as a spare (to replace a miss-matched spare tyre).

Cheaper than 5x new tyres and perfectly acceptable.
