Replacing Td5 fuel pump with Bosch 044 inline pump

    Hi all

I had a good chat with my mate stig0000 the other day about replacing the td5 fuel pump with an inline pump, located outside the car near the fuel filter. The idea would be to strip out the guts of the pump so that the fuel pick up and fuel guage float is still there, and just fit the inline pump on the pressure side of the fuel filter. Surely it will be a more reliable option than the current set up. My car has 280k kms on it and still on it's original pump, which is a miracle I think, considering that others have had failures with very low kms.

You can get complete replacements from the UK, non-genuine ones for less than $200, however I think a modification like this would be well worth it as the Bosch unit is very reliable.

    What are people's thoughts?

You will have to fit 2 pumps as the TD5 pump is a duel stage pump. the first stage supplies fuel to the fuel filter at a rate of 10psi and 30 l/hr, it then goes to the secondary pump and this goes to the fuel pressure regulator at a rate of 58psi and 180 l/hr. This is why the TD5 has 4 hoses. low pressure out, low pressure return, High pressure out and High pressure return. It could be done. The best way to remove all internals from tank would be to fit a L series Freelander tank unit, it has no pump in it. Fit maybe a electric fuel lift to the filter and then the bosch pump after the filter.

For the relatively small cost and knowing that it will work properly, I wouldn't consider anything other than the standard setup.

Same. If you're that worried about fuel pump failures then just carry a spare.

Im still trying to get a pump that can be easily modded into the deefer cradle and meet reliability requirements without costing more than the original unit...

I cant tick all the boxes but I can tick them each individually. (and in one case 2 of them but the pump is worth more than a new tank AND sender/pump unit).

IF you are TRUELY desperate you can do the following.

cut the LP line and put an external EFI petrol pump in that so that you get the LP supply requirement, Cut the HP supply line and place in that a HP fuel pump..

heres some places that list pumps capable of hitting and sustaing the coveted 75 PSI + the flow rate required.

Thanks for those links Dave. I suppose there is no way to do it without using two pumps, like you say it will be hard to find something that ticks all the boxes. I will keep looking into it and see if the mod is worth it.

No, not the XF, but some Commodores did, notably the VK, also Volvos/Mercs/Pugs etc from about 1976 with mechanical injection.
