    Lt95 no high range

I have an LT95 that won't go into high range. The gearbox is sitting on the floor in the shed at the moment. I pulled off the top plate to have a look, and the lever is selecting high range correctly, but I can still spin the input shaft with out anything happening. Low range is fine, and all 4 gears and reverse work, just not high range.

Any ideas what the problem is?

G'day Scott, Most likely either the selector fingers are out of adjustment ( this could be because the thrust washers on the intermediate shaft are worn) or the engaging dogs on hi range or the input gear are worn/broken.

The Bearman is probably right ! the first symptom of this disease if frequent coming out of High range on its own . Seen some poor travellers with Hi-Lo occy strapped into high range LOL .Pity that dont last long before the thrust just chews off the dog anyway , then there is no High range at all .It all starts with the intermediate thrusts wearing out and most commonly caused by the use of the wrong oil .Id like a Buck for every LT95 transfer case ive rebuilt because it had just been serviced by the local Kmart/ultra'etc and put Gbox oil in the Gbox instead of engine oil.

It doesn't pop out of high range, it goes in but there is no drive in high range.

I'll have to check if the rave I have covers the LT95. I can't remember which one I have. Actually I haven't seen it for a while either.

Scott, The lever probably feels like it is in gear (it can only move so far and the spring detent holds it), but if the engaging dogs are worn/broken from the intermediate thrust washers being worn there will be no drive through the gears. I would drop the sump plate and with it "in gear" try to move the hi range whilst holding the middle input gear. Also check for movement between the gears on the shaft. The colour of the oil should give some idea of whats going on.

With the top plate off, it looks like the selector fingers are gong all the way across. I'll try take some pictures on teh weekend. I'm currently changing suspension bushes in the 'weekend car', so once that's finished, I'll have some time to tinker.

What exactly do you mean when you say you can spin the input shaft without anything happening?.You understand that if the centre diff isn't locked you would be able to turn the input shaft and prevent one of the output shafts from turning just with the resistance from your hand
The same thing will happen in low range though and you say that works fine

If you spin the input shaft without the diff lock engaged, either the front or rear drive shaft will spin. Currently, in low range, one spins, in high range, none spin so high range isn't engaging. With the diff lock engaged in low range, both shafts spin, in high range, none spin.

    Low range engaged:

    High Range engaged:

I'm wondering if the low range selector is slightly out of adjustment. When selecting high, the low range selector pushes up against the gear on the right so I'm wondering if that shops high properly engaging.

The thrust washers are fine, it's all tight so there's no slop in there.

Scott, I can see your problem in the photos. The small hi range gear that fits on the centre diff is missing. That is why you have no hi range. Most likely it has broken and will be on the bottom of the transfer case in several pieces. Do NOT drive the vehicle as this could damage the other gears. You will need to drop the transfer case sump and remove the handbrake and rear housing and remove the centre diff to replace this gear. If you dont have a manual you can PM me and I can assist with advice on removal/refit and setting it all up again.
