td5 defender very very wet!!! wont start

Hi all, I recently got a bit too enthusiastic and crossed a river river that was far too deep! Well I didnt so much cross it as go into it and stay there:-( The sediment in the river had changed a with recent rain fall and even though the water level had dropped to almost normal levels it caught me out and well every thing got soaked. the worst part is that I am a keen photographer and I lost the lot. 6- lenses, flash 2x dlsrs...the list goes on. My Father lives very close and has a bloody big tractor, so with a desperate please from me in a wet driving seat and many screams from the kids, who I pulled out the drivers window, across the flat chequer plated wings and onto the bank.

The engine was running while submerged but only briefly, as soon as the water filled the cabin and passed over the level of the seat box the engine stopped. I towed it to my parents where I stripped out the ecm, removed the lid and let it dry out completely. as well as drying out the ecm compartment which was full to the top with water.

All main body electrics work, ie remote central locking, electric windows, lighter, wipers. (that all I have checked so far) The air intake was dry thanks to having fitted a snorkel. the fuel pump was working constantly but I disconnected the earth ( before removing the ecm too) which stopped it, on reconnecting it now appears normal

I have reconnected the ecm but there is no signal to start. I turn the key and there is nothing but I think a click from the ecu. I does not try to turn over. Can someone please tell me where the start signal comes from, is from the key to starter or does it go through the ecm. I have heard of many stories of ecms being fine after a drink so long as they dry out but as I have no start signal I am trying to find if I have another problem instead.

    thanks in advance

thats a bummer, i just finished putting the interior back in my disco after having done a similar thing, lanolined everything while the interior was stripped out to dry. Long life the 300tdi, she started up no problems not having any electrics to worry about

I'm still learning about ECU's etc but I think that the click you are hearing might be the starter relay, located behind the plastic cover in front of the high/low lever on the bulkhead. When I got oil in my seatbase which had tracked down the loom, I removed my ECU to clean it. I also had a go at removing oil from the loom after replacing the injector harness. This must have dis lodged the small start wire to the starter, as I had the same 'click'. My heart sunk at the time but I thought, if I'm getting a click from the relay it has to be further down. Spade terminal was dirty on the starter. Try removing and cleaning that... Use a head torch as you'll need both hands to get to it! Good luck!

My bet is the ecu is rooted, water and electricity don't mix, most likely fried the ecu

I have tracked down a wiring diagram and it seems to me that the signal to start comes from the ignition and goes straight to the starter motor via a relay. The ecm is not involved in cranking just fuel distribution. My bet is that relay is crook. Thats not to say other things are not buggered either but there might be hope yet, fingers crossed:-)

    Check again old son

The TD5 ECU controls feed to the starter...

More likely one of 2 things has happened...

1 - ECU is not happy anymore

2 - Starter, being immersed in water has stopped working

The cheaper of these is option (2) - Bypass the starter (old short the terminal trick) and see if she cranks...

Or - Whack a Multimeter on the solonoid activating wire and turn the key.. If you are getting power to the trigger wire, then starter needs a pull down.

Anyones ECU will test the vehicle, it will crank but not fire... So you can test if you need to...

The ECU controls the start relay via the negative side of the coil (terminal 86). You can use a multi meter to see if the relay is being earthed via the ECU (black/orange stripe), ie check its voltage relative to earth when you turn the key. If it remains high you can temporarily earth the relay and see if it works.

An update. I got the starter to spin over by bypassing the solenoid but due to flat battery couldnt give it a decent cranking. given that tyhe starter spun but not via the key I figured a shot ecu. No so!! I gave it a roll start and she fired up and goes good a gold, all electrics, air con , alarm, but still nothing from the key. I will strip off the starter and sort out what I am guessing is the solenoid next chance i get. luckily I still have my trusty 300tdi 90 so am not totally lost and and rover-less in the meantime:-)

So what I have learned is that you can fill a defender td5 up with water till over the wings and once dry it should be fine... but dont:-)

when i had my my old td5 the ecu got wet and it stopped working. i took it out to dry it overnight in front of the heater then put it back in, it started a couple of times then stopped again. took it out and dried it near the heater for a couple more days and all was ok after that. hope it's as easy as that.
    cheers
