    Question Transfer Gears or Diff Gears?

    I have a '95 D1 V8 auto. I run 245/75R16's (31" roughly) and am finding the gearing a problem. I do a lot of country driving and at 100 kph i am only doing just over 2000rpm. I also tow a trailer for work a lot and it spends a lot of time in 3rd when if i had 2500 rpm it would stay in 4th.
    So what to do?
    The Disco only has 180,000km on it and both the transfer case and the diffs are nice and quiet.
    Should i put 1.4 gears in the transfer case or change the diff ratio's?
    Which is cheapest and easiest to install? (transfer gears are cheaper to buy).

    If it were me I would not nesecarily look at cheapest.....because if you change the TC you only get high range change. The TC also is NOT the weak point. IMO id go for new R+P and get a decent carrier like ashcroft locker...this would then give you #1 the gearing you want, #2 stronger R+P, the LR known weak point, #3 a strong carrier....another LR known weak spot and #4 lower low range gearing also

    Thanks, i agree that R&P's are the best way to go, but budget is a major factor with this vehicle. I love it, but am hoping (when we pay off my wifes car in 3 yrs) to get a Defender. I have never found low range wanting when climbing, only going down, but a petrol auto without reduction gears will only ever be so good.
    With both options would i need to rebuild or could i just fit new seals?

    IMHO it isn't worth doing the transfer case unless you are going to change both your high and low gear sets.

    In the same way, I agree with the comment above. If you are going to do the diffs, then make it worth it and do it all at once.


    Personally - I recommend the diffs

    I've got a complete TC from a 97 defender that would have the lower high range gearset in it if you're interested. Only problem is I'm in Sydney.
    Just want to get it out of the shed - make me an offer!!

    If you are happy with low range and only unhappy with high range then it sounds like a Defender transfer case or transfer case gears would be appropriate. It'll be cheaper to buy and install this than doing the CW/P change. Also, you'll probably get some money back again by selling your old transfer case.

    Hi there Vogue,
    I am not totally convinced that the transfer case/diff ratio's change out will solve your problem. I read alot of aulro threads and it seems alot of the boys are always chasing more hp/torque with there v8's etc. What about entertaining the ideal of beefing up the V8 to give your alot more torque so it can pull really good at low revs.
    It sounds a bit radical, what about installing a supercharger on it. I'm not sure about your total budget but it might be a good excercise to do looking at costing etc etc.
    PS. I reckon you will be alot happy with the disco! Talking from exprience its a good feeling when your towing up a hill into a head wind you put your foot down and it speeds up no worries.

    About 5kg more than your best ever bench press. Im sure they change their weight depending on which monkey gets to do the job of a transmission jack.
