The complete engine was shipped back to the motherland for diagnosis and a new one fitted under warranty.

    No problems since.

Thats the diagnosis I am most happy with.

So any symptons the driver would notice before the engine is destroyed?

Hi all.....lots of interesting replys. No leadfoot driving....did pull a caravan over the mountains...however the van is not heavy...around 1800K...judicise use of the throttle. No gas...no chip...no big exhaust!!

In fact i had no warning of any impending damage it simply went into limp mode and damage done. It certainly looks like classic detonation. Justinc...that sounds exactly like mine. No warranty though....the extended one....really...forget them and save your money....thanks again for the replys.

I am surprised what you have said about the extended warranty - from what you have said you would not also be covered for say a bearing going in a diff and the metal wrecking the diff, you would only be covered for the bearing - it does seem really strange that if your engine failed due to an injector/overfuelling issue then you would only be covered for the injector and not the engine.

I knew that you had to jump through hoops with these insurances with respect to services etc but if these requirements were met then they generally paid up.

If I were you I would be getting a lawyer to have a close look at this policy - even if it is as you say, it would not seem to be "conscionable" and may be able to be upheld irrespective of the exclusions.

Maybe asking the ACCC or the insurance ombudsman to investigate might help.

    Hi Paul,

Apparently Unfortunately not, this guy is pretty switched on and would've picked up anything unusual beforehand. Came to the start of a hill with a small (1.6t) van on the back, and was just accelerating to go up it and that was about as far as he got

    Garry,
This engine went through fuel testing etc etc etc and FINALLY was the subject of a warranty claim when no other ereason for failure could be extablished.

Hi all, I have spoken to RAA who have put me onto a solicitor who can give advice in relation to this. I have kept all file notes so I know what I have and haven't done. I guess the message is be careful with these things. They are really hard to work with. By the way...I am slowly falling in love with my landy again!!!! JD

If I could be sure I knew which injector was used for that cylinder I would chuck it away, otherwise would probably replace the lot.
