a few weeks or so ago my 300tdi went from starting instantly i.e. as soon as you hit the starter it was away to now taking a few seconds to fire up. once running everything appears good.

no, you proably have a AIR leak not a fuel leak
umm if air is replacing diesel than where is the diesel going, some/mose back to the fuel tank but assumed some would escape the line
no new drips on driveway
the engine is runs fine, not using any extra diesel, power is the same so i sorta discounted the fuel system sucking air
i more thought the problem maybe after the injector pump which is all new for me
So the leak could be "near" the injector pump and when parked fuel drains back/down into the tank, leaving an air gap in the line? When you start up it take a touch longer to start because the fuel has to pump up to replace the air?
Sounds logical to me.

Battery it is important to have a realy good cranking battery as they get old the cranking amps drop![]()
an air leak on the suction side of the pump is unlikely to show up as a fuel leak.
if the tank pickup is a little blocked and the rubber seal on the bottom of the fuel water seperator is a bit dicey when the pump tries to draw fuel it gets some fuel and a little air when you shut the engine down any air thats made it into the pump needs to be purged or compressed enough to fire the injector.
I got clued in on the SWMBO's ride when I couldnt get a clean flow of fuel from the fuel filter bleed point.
