How much movement is acceptable on a 300 tdi turbo?

    I've been asked, but since I don't have a 300tdi, I thought I'd ask here.
How much side to side and back and forth is acceptable on a second hand turbo??
    I would assume very little?

although remember many turbos use a solid bearing that relies on a 'skim' of pressurised oil to 'float' the spindle so there will be some movement in these types.

There should be 'side to side' movement at all, as for 'back and forth' which I'll call end-float, that should be minimal only about 1mm max.

This end-float allows for the rotor to thrust forward when under full load and spinning around the region of 40K RPM. Must admit I'm not too sure of the RPM of that particular turbo, but it'll be spinning somewhere around that +/-.
