I've been asked, but since I don't have a 300tdi, I thought I'd ask here.
How much side to side and back and forth is acceptable on a second hand turbo??

There should be 'side to side' movement at all, as for 'back and forth' which I'll call end-float, that should be minimal only about 1mm max.
This end-float allows for the rotor to thrust forward when under full load and spinning around the region of 40K RPM. Must admit I'm not too sure of the RPM of that particular turbo, but it'll be spinning somewhere around that +/-.
depends on if it was made to the rest of landerovers exacting standards
