I wouldn't bother with the air holes, they are just a new way of directing sticks into your oil filter or sump, you know the saying, "you build it, they will come", just leave it solid plate. If you are using checkerplate have the smooth side down, esp. Aluminium, the tread lugs on the other side will grab on rocks, you want to slide over rocks, not grab hold of them. If the 2 lugs sticking out the front are recovery points, then the shackle pin holes should be vertical and not horizontal, shackles are designed only to be loaded in the straight ahead line, with the holes horizontal any pull off dead centre will pull the shackle sideways causing damage. The shackle pin in the vertical plane will align itself to the line of pull and will not be damaged, my 2 bobs worth, Regards Frank.
I'm not arguing with this, merely mentioning that most recovery points fitted to vehicles have the holes horizontally as per the example.
