    DIY - Steering guard

    Hi all,
I'm planning on building my own steering guard for my Def 110, I have designed one and before I go on I would be happy if anyone has any suggestions on the design.

    Cheers

I wouldn't bother with the air holes, they are just a new way of directing sticks into your oil filter or sump, you know the saying, "you build it, they will come", just leave it solid plate. If you are using checkerplate have the smooth side down, esp. Aluminium, the tread lugs on the other side will grab on rocks, you want to slide over rocks, not grab hold of them. If the 2 lugs sticking out the front are recovery points, then the shackle pin holes should be vertical and not horizontal, shackles are designed only to be loaded in the straight ahead line, with the holes horizontal any pull off dead centre will pull the shackle sideways causing damage. The shackle pin in the vertical plane will align itself to the line of pull and will not be damaged, my 2 bobs worth, Regards Frank.

I'm not arguing with this, merely mentioning that most recovery points fitted to vehicles have the holes horizontally as per the example.

Snip: then the shackle pin holes should be vertical and not horizontal,

In the schematic, the holes are aligned in the vertical plane... are you suggesting that the lugs be "twisted" through 90 deg such that the holes are now aligned in the horizontal thereby allowing the shackle pin to be inserted vertically... ?

Most people thought the world was flat, once, when people design things for convenience of manufacture rather than the correct way, it doesn't make it right, if that is what you are saying, Regards Frank.

I am suggesting that "Snip: then the shackle pin holes should be vertical and not horizontal,
As they are designed to be used.
IMO the recovery points should be on the ends of the chassis rails, after they have been boxed and strengthened, a pair of swivelling eye bolts. I don't like pulling from under the vehicle, there is a tendencey for the strap/sling to be damaged by the bar or being trapped by the bar on the ground if the wheels drop into a hole, Regards Frank.

what about when bow shackles are use for lifting on say a swivel hook of a crane? they are then verticle and rotating. horizontally or vertically mounted on a bar or SG the differance is about 0.

The axis of the hole in the recovery point is horizontal, the plate that the hole is in, is vertical.
