    LT230R Parts

I was emailing the very helpful Mr. Ashcroft about his rebuild kits for the LT230 and he said that the only bits he can't help with are the bearings and thrust washers for the intermediate gear.

Sure enough, I couldn't find a listing anywhere on the net for the thrusts.

    So what now???

It's a shame spares sources have dried up, because I think the R series cases are in some respects are better than the Ts .For one thing, they dont hog out the intermediate gear hole in the front of the case like Ts do when the bearing preload isn;t kept in check.
A mate of mine uses a 1.003:1 R series in his built injected 405cu in powered 39'' tyred Volvo Portalled Jeep. Because the gears are narrower than on a T, and he was concerned about breakage and spares availability in future, he collected several spare transfercases from some fairly grungy looking worn out old auto Rangeys. Despite the splines in the mainshaft gear being well flogged out, the intermediate gears, bearings and shafts have all been in as new condition. He gives his vehicle a right royal flogging on some of Victorias toughest tracks and the transfercase is holding up just fine.

Crap. I'm in a slight hurry or I'd pull the box out and check it first. I wonder if you can get thrusts resurfaced? I might have to look for a T or just get one from Ashcrofts . . . I'm going to miss the bloody Dry season again!

Or I could just put in an LT95, but at the moment it's a decently quiet transmission with the 727. Hmph.

1.003, since it's from an auto. I can get the gears and rebuild kit from Ashcrofts, so I might look for a transfer case down in Perth if I wind up there in a few weeks to buy a Falcon, (which is looking likely).

    Hi Davo

Those parts may be temporarily unavailable, before you write off getting those parts through your preferred supplier, I would send them another request and ask if when they could be expecting more and is there a chance they may have a modified arrangement to supply as well.

That is the other thing, you may be able to get the bearings here in Australia from a bearing retailer and then take the thrust washers to an engineering shop and have some made.

Good luck and keep us in the loop.

Haven't got a transfercase handy to look at, but if the thrust surfaces on the intermediate gear can be machined back it may be possible to fit a needle roller thrust bearing assembly in place of the bronxe faced thrust washers.

All good ideas, and thanks for that. The bearings are the same as the LT95, so are still available. Dave Ashcroft just said they couldn't supply them.

But it would seem that the thrusts are simply unavailable anymore, (I don't think Land Rover used the LT230R after the mid-eighties or so), though you just never know what may turn up in England.

At the moment, since I live in the middle of nowhere, modifications are out of the question, but I'll look into that later when I get the chance. I'm also pretty sure in vintage restoration circles there are bearing recon companies.

Anyway, someone has very kindly offered to sell me a good LT230T, so I'll have to have a look at that when I get the chance.

I run a 230R in my rangie, simply for the high ratio. Mine was sourced old and barely used (80,000km), all the seals had hardened and the oil turned to gum.
I've only done 30,000km since. But it's quiet and smooth and shown no problems.
