Go and buy a 12-point 1/4" drive socket. That's what I use. Most 1/4" drive sockets are, however, only 6-point (hex).

you must different bolts to others. 8mm double hex 1/4 socket is my tool of choice.

All the old ones up to AFAIK 4.0 etc have Phillips head screws, which IMHO are entirely satisfactory. Trust the Germans to over engineer something so that they need tools made of unobtainium.

Given the chance I like to chuck out the double hex ones and fit allen key or earlier Philips type screws instead. When I met these for the first time ('96 D1) I bashed a low grade cruddy 8mm socket onto them to remove. (You could also tap on a suitable piece of tubing, they usually aren't that tight). Now I have a double hex socket but had trouble sourcing one from a tool shop.

Yup, all Philips here as well. Chuck those bolts out and get some screws.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Had the same problem .... .Could not find a Hex (12 point) 1/4 drive socket

    Solution for me was .....

Bought a el cheapo ring spanner from the pawn broker ... $1
Cut the Hex ring part off the spanner (hacksaw)

I have heaps of those el cheapo $10 1/4 drive socket sets
Grab a socket that is slightly smaller than the O/D of the Hex ring
...... File off the chrome finish where you need to weld .....
Place the socket on the ring and tag weld it (mig or stick)

Grind off the dag spot welds

    Good to go

    Cheers

I walked into Autobarn, walked to the stand that had single supatool sockets hanging off it and grabbed an 8mm double hex, I think it cost about $8 all up. problem solved.

    I went to Repco ...nope
I Went to Coventries ... Nope
I even went to supapeep ..... nope
Spied the pawn shop on the way home .... Hence the $1 ring spanner

Welcome to WA ..... A place where you can spend $20 on fuel looking for a $8 part .... that no one has

    Cheers
    Mike
