Can I run two alternators in parallel?

Ta very much, that would be good. It's very hard around here tracking down anything that isn't supposed to be attached to a Toyota. I must be getting fed up, (or becoming more mature?!?), as I'm just taking the simplest route when fixing or modifying these days.

When it takes, say, ten days for a rebuilt driveshaft to be returned - making the total time for the job from sending it away to getting it back almost three weeks! - that's a hell of a lot of time spent chasing, ordering, waiting, or just finding something in the first place.

So if it's an alternator I need, I start with eBay!

sorry, no photos of my old setup, can take some when I get this one done but no telling at this stage when I may get around to doing it. A description may help; the aircon compressor has 4 mounting lugs on the top, identical to those on the bottom that it is actually mounted with, I made some simple brackets from flat bar to pick up these 4 holes and extend inwards, the alt was mounted on the inboard end of said brackets so that it sat in the gap between the compressor and water pump. It ran off the aircon belt (requiring a longer belt) and belt adjustment was by the idler pulley as normal. That's probably clear as mud. Hardest bit is setting it up to run the belt perfectly true, I went through a few belts early on.

One of my reasons for going this route is the potential difficulty of driving a high-output alternator off a single A-section V-belt. Plus I have a perfectly good alt sitting in the shed so no cost.

Marine alternator suppliers are your friend.

D, DUAL OUTPUT MODELS: Each terminal provides proper charging to a separate battery or bank. Each output terminal can charge up to the alternators max rating but both terminals together can not exceed the alternators maximum rating. Remember that the current (amps) flows to the battery with the least resistance or greatest need first. Once equal, both batteries will receive about the same charge. The regulator looks at one battery only, so we recommend that the house bank be used for sensing. Bridging or connecting the two terminals makes the output single. DO NOT OPERATE without each main output terminal connected to a battery or bridged. To charge a third or fourth separate battery, a two bank isolator must be installed on each output terminal. For extended storage periods, disconnect the alternator from the batteries. The voltage equalization circuit in the alternator allows a small (milli amp) flow between the batteries to prevent surface voltage buildup.




And I happen to have an old one off of an old V8 rangie (I think), single V belt, best guess is 50-65A The fan plastic is damaged, operational condition unknown and yours for the asking +P+H

dual output unit--is that the same as old 12 diode BMW bosch alternators used to reduce noise.

re earlier post-fired up was refered to charging output.
very hard to stop alt from charging a little when spinning so it has to be connected to some type of battery load.

to use an alternator as an induction motor-the stator would need A/C power.im guessing rewound to suit voltages-my question is how much power would it make.

I used loads of Italian fixed magnet generator type motors to drive Air conditioning compressors.about 15-40 amps draw.

Philip's alternator mount is almost identical to mine, only difference is that my brackets were horizontal across the top of the a/c compressor whereas his are vertical on the side of the compressor. Also looks like he has an adjustable strut, whereas i used a simple rigid strut of 20x6 flat bar, all belt adjustment being done with the original idler/adjuster.
And here was me thinking my setup was special.

No the strut is just flat bar.
Adjustment is via the idler pulley . Belt is 1025MM.

A big thanks to you guys for answering my questions. That's a nice looking marine alternator but too exotic for me - I've got a few Holden red motor ones to use as a second, but thanks again.
