I've been running my P38 for 15 years and never seen better than 21L per hundred K. Seen lots worse, when towing, like 24L per %
It pained me, but it was still less than the depreciation on a replacement so I just wore it.
When the engine died I was left with an excellent truck that I liked, in good condition but with no power source. Again, the depreciation on a replacement was a factor I could not ignore. So I spent up big on a stage 3 fully tuned engine that I imported from UK.
Now, I'm a lead foot. Can't help myself. So on my first country trip with the new engine I could not believe what I was seeing. After 21L per hundred, how does 12.3L per % sound to you? Around town I'm getting about 13.5L per % and it is not yet run in.
The car is transformed, - it is a rocket. Comparatively speaking that is, - it still is a heavy truck but it does the business in an amazing way. Would I do it again? You betcha. Is it worth the money? To me, yes, but only 'cos the old engine was cactus, and by replacing the engine with a fully engineered, tuned solution I knew what I was getting. Spending what a stage 3 tuned engine bored out to 5.4L costs is not a proposition unless you have little choice.
I would've got nothing for the car as it was, and buying a s/h replacement truck would not have known what problems I was buying.

Also, one day you're going to die and it won't matter, anyway. No, seriously! You've got to enjoy owning something like a car, given how much money the damn things cost.
And I've heard other stories about how bigger engines use less fuel in Range Rovers. I'm planning something similar, one day.

perhaps "Turner Engineering" actually know what they are doing ? they have a combination of parts and standard machining practices that actually works . For this ,there may be price penalty over your standard backyard job,CAVEAT EMPTOR

that answers my question.
I looked at a 94 3.9 auto low kms the other day - extremely nice to drive and made me wonder if I could live with a V8 D1 vs a TDI D1 which I have had.
Well at 20l/100km....I would not be able to carry enough fuel to do some of the trips I at least want to have the option of doing.
So that is that..but soo nice.
If you are looking for a low k unmolested D1 auto - have a search on facebook markets, the car is in Melton and the guy selling is very keen to sell. Currently at 6500.
