    ZF Auto valve body cleanout

Anyone pulled their ZF valve body apart for cleaning out ?
Ive had 2 instances now in the last 6 months where Ive selected reverse and had no drive for a good minute or so then very slowly I can feel the oil pressure building on the clutch pack bit by bit before reaching full pressure then all is good .
Ive done the deceleration in 1st and 2nd test I found recommended in many forums for this symptom and the clutches hold fine .(indicating its not the F clutch cylinder failure)
Im suspicious of the valve block having an obstruction in the reverse port valves or channels ( if theres such a thing) or a faulty component in this area .

pull the auto sump and look at the filter, it is most likely clogged.
you can buy a service kit which has a sump seal, filter and some other bits.
before my first disco needed an auto o/haul i pulled the filter and cleaned it, i don't reccomend this to anyone, it is a specialist thing and hard to clean without proper gear,
but cleaning the filter allows the pump to provide fluid to the box and away we go again until the worn parts refill the filter with metal.
your description of an obstruction not allowing fluid to the ports is spot on,
    the filter is blocked.
put a service kit in it and prepare for a gearbox rebuild.

In reverse only though ? Im real sus on something in the reverse chanells or valving . Wish I knew how the fluid gets to the reverse clutches from the filter . I need to pull the valve block and open it up and see I think . I wonder if the reverse fluid path has valves or piston or something like that which is partially obstructed and has on 2 occasions almost fully blocked the flow . Thats my take on it !

I have the Genuine ZF workshop manual, but my Canon scanner wont work with this miserable Windows 7, pulling the valve body doesn't look easy, lots of springs and balls and special tools, Regards Frank.

Seems the BMW mob are a lot braver than Landie owners, at least when it comes to pulling apart ZF auto's

After viewing the video, to me it does not seem much different than a 3 speed Borg Warner auto valve body. I used to regulary remove the valve body and clean out the sludge that used to accumulate. The first time I pulled a BW35 valve body apart, it was 90% full of sludge. Be careful when you do this as there may be a couple of small springs and balls that may fall out. Take a photo with your camera or phone. And do not rush this job, be carefull. Once I get off these crutches, I will be doing mine in the D1.
