Thread: ZF Auto valve body cleanout

The only tool you need is a T27 Torx bit, and a digital camera to photograph the thing as you split it in half. There are, as mentioned, check balls and springs etc that need to be relocated carefully after cleaning, and a separator plate gasket is required, too.

Ring Manuel Automatics in Thomastown, 94664499 they can supply separator plate gasket and sump gasket/ filter etc.

The ZF manual states that you need special tool Puller (5x46 000 170) to remove 8 sealing rings and Quote: "special adjustment tool 5 P 89 001 673. Lightly press valve body against special tool. In that position tighten all connecting bolts of valve body. Tightening of bolts should be done from inside to outside (To be torqued to 8Nm)". You may be able to rig up your own special tools but the manual is mostly in photos (black and white) and the tools shown are very poorly photographed so not possible to copy and make your own tool from photos.

Had a look at the link from (offtrack) and see that the symptoms are leading to a faulty reverse gear interlock valve : whatever that is .
Do you guys think thats located in the valve body ?

Yes, ALL valves are in the Valve body.

no special tools needed, just a scrupulously clean workspace and patients. Dont try to do it in situe unless youve got a fetish for making life hard for yourself.


I was supposed to be getting a second hand box to do a strip down on as part payment for a job its fallen through.... If someones got a second handy that they dont mind having pulled I can still slate the time to do it later this year
