The kit I have which is genuine Land Rover has linkages and the main body of it looks like the first pics that were put up on this thread.
My after market workshop manual only displays a simple pull type arrangement, a bit like a choke lever that was to fitted to vehicles of yesteryear.
I would like to be able to fit an aftermarket heater up against the bulkhead as well, but it looks like space will be tight once the hand throttle is fitted. That later 2A arrangement that Diana posted looks like it would be the best option so that a heater could still be fitted.
Thanks for all the input guys.
Cheers, Mick.

Yeah, the other right
Series 3 heater is in the engine bay - I am at a loss to know why you want to fit a different heater? The late 2a throttle will have problems fitting in the 'glovebox', as the Series 2/2a glovebox is a different shape to that on the Series 3.
Is it possible that yours is a Series 2a not Series 3?

Series 3 heaters, if in good shape, are not that bad - and Smiths recirculating ones are not that good! A lot of the perception of poor heaters comes from no or not working thermostat, poor electrical connections to the fan, leaking and crushed heater ducting, and clogged (both water and air passages) heater cores. If I were to not use a Series 3 one, I would be looking to find another one that would fit where the original was, perhaps just fit a larger core to a Series 3 one.
