    thanks for the links
    still cant see the pics on the LR4x4 site (even after joining)
    anyway, i also found a good toutourial on a VW site with good pics (slightly different but still the VE pump family)
    i also found a thread on here bout a home made version of the LR tool to hold the timing belt pulley in place so you can remove the pump without dismantling the timing belt.
    so out with the pump and off to a neighbours mechanical shop to borrow his engine room and, going on the thinking if that seal is gone which one is going to follow shortly after, doing the whole pump.
    going to be a learning experience, but thats half the fun

    tomorrow is the day.
    i put a seal kit through the pump, everything inside was within spec, re-timed it to 0.60 plunger protrusion and it is ready to go back in the disco. here goes

    oh and if that goes well an ashcrofts locker is going in

    Good reading.

    I have (had?) a similiar problem. Major power loss (300 Tdi defender), non responsive throttle blowing blue grey smoke sometimes.
    Replaced ordinary intercooler hoses and fuel filter, drained sedimenter, checked fuel pump. 50 Kpa and fills a middy a bit over half full in 60 'turns' through 2 metre of hose.
    Disconnected waste gate at 'T' fitting and connected pressure gauge. Drove for 10 Km's or so keeping boost to <100 Kpa and all was fine.
    Question, if the waste gate or its hose was faulty could this have been my problem as the other connection from the 'T' goes to the injector pump. Is this the likley cause of my problem or just co-incidental that it ran OK?
    I can't run it again at the moment as the clutch (hopefully) went CLUNK going from second to third on the way home and I now have no go at all, engine seems fine though.

    Ive seen a toyota with a failed wastegate return spring, anything over 2psi had it crack the gate fully open.

    coild be similar, on a cold engine see if you can move the actuator.

    that didnt go as well as id hoped

    pump is in and running fine, no more fuel in the boost compensator housing. and all it cost me was a seal kit, a bit of parts cleaner and a carton of jimmy for the use of the engine room

    still down on power and still air in the return fuel tho. now there is milky fuel at 2/4 injectors. seems it was a combination of injectors and the pump.

    the temptation to burn it was hard to resist when i noticed the air again.
