    depends on the charger.

if its an old school non pulsing one no.

if it does freaky pulse charging and battery recovery yes.

Hi Dave and why is this a problem?

I’ve never heard of a single incident where a multi stage battery charger has caused any problems, but I’m happy to stand corrected.

The risk with connecting a battery charger to a defender is where to make the actual connections.

Because the Defender’s battery is under the seat, in a confined space, connecting the battery charger’s positive lead ( the first lead to connect ) is simple.

But because the battery charger’s negative lead needs to be connect away from the battery to avoid any chance a a spark occurring, which could ignite any gas coming from the battery, finding a good earth could be a problem.

I've been connecting the charger to the battery side terminal of my USI-160 and where it's earthed to the body ... once the starting battery voltage is up the USI connects the Aux battery and both are charged.

No problems to date. 2 x Optima Yellow Tops. Ozcharge 21A smart charger.

I know of one case where a computer equipped car with a battery isolation system fried the ECU. There was a whole stack of other "well you shouldn't have done that either" involved but the final straw was the charger and how it was hooked up.
I have had a couple of problems on some earlier models of vehicle with the recovery spikes making enough electrical noise to upset some of the "active after shutdown" gear which has been more of an inconvenience than and outright problem.

Depending on which charger Im using (comes down to the size of the aligator clips and the amps) I go for the hot fuse, simply pull that and use a spade connector to hook into the hot side of the fuse and grab one of the fuse panel mounting screws or the metal fuse frame with an aligator clip for earth. Good for upto a 10A charger but I usually only put my 4a trickle charger on that way.

For up to 25A I just grab the statermotor bolt and the mounting plate for the Fuel cooler.

The "no kidding, charge it Right now I dont care if the main feed to the house melts charging" Straight to the battery terminals.
