a good version of one of these... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FIT-Pro-P...item3f0d4fbc8c
(and even then the cheapies work surprisingly well.)
Looking to buy a grease gun which will be used primarily for servicing a D2, so basically 2 prop shafts every 10K km.
My dad has a Macnaught that is getting a bit tired - he's had it as long as I can remember so it's been around for least 35-40 years. So I know they are good gear, but at around $120 they are a bit pricey for the amount of work it's likely to do.
My budget covers the mid-range guns at $60-80 Toledo, STM, and the cheaper Alemite 500/550 guns.
Any recommendations or otherwise in this price range?
cheers
Paul

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I bought the cheapest possible one from SuperCheap in 2006 and have used it as necessary every 10 thousand ks. There's not much to go wrong I reckon.
I've had a Wanner grease gun for years, it was quite expensive to buy up front but it stills goes strong, i think it develops around 400 bar, which really pushes the crud out if my UJ's
Cost me around 60 GBP
Given that it's only for the prop shafts, a smaller version with a pistol grip works well. Add a flexible nozzle onto it and it makes re-greasing easy - one hand to hold the tip onto the nipple, and the other pumps. The standard size, whilst good for multiple jobs and long intervals between refills, is a little too big for just 4 uni's every so often.
Thanks for all the advice. I had been planning to get a lever gun, but bought a pistol grip gun on the basis of comments.
I ended up grabbing a Toledo pistol grip gun from supercheap. The main reason I went with the full size was that I wanted to use cartridges, and the quality of the 85g grease selection was pretty iffy.
The Toledo was $20 more than the SCA gun but came with both solid and flexible extensions. The SCA has solid extension only, and by the time I bought a flexible hose there was only a few dollars difference.
Picked up a cartridge of Castrol LMM while I was there and have already given the propshafts a grease.![]()
10K for greasing the uni's seems a bit too long to me, I service/grease my uni's after every trip off-road as most involve numerous water crossings, Regards Frank.
When I was driving towtrucks in the Alice the rule was if you have been on dirt, then every grease nipple gets done. I carry that over to my RRC. Even if I haven't been on dirt it gets done every month or two. In the 6 or 7 years I have owned it (probably 150 + thousand km) I haven't had to replace a uni joint.
