You can buy new harnesses from the UK for 34 pounds,I'd just buy a new one every 2years or so. Pat

I read on another unrelated mercedes forum that you can prevent the engine oil wicking through the wires by stripping the outer sheath near each injector and soldering the wire strands solid then epoxy over the soldered area. Obvously on a clean new harness. What do you reckon?

That sounds like a great solution for the cable that exits the bottom of the canon plug , where it comes out of the rocker cover, its easy to get to & easy to work on, Even if the loom leaks the oil can't get past the soldered part & won't wick down the loom into the ECU.

I havent had the peasure of changing my harness yet but would stripping and soldering a 10mm length at the injectors be more effective and easier?
