Help diagnosing a Defender drive line problem. Clangity clang!
Some back ground info to the problem.
Was off road on my huge 31" skinny tyres and heard a bang from the back. Easy one, broken axle you think, well close it was a stripped flange so what I decided to do was leave it all together axle and all and just drive home with the centre diff in. I'm driving home and 10kms later after a very sharp turn a large bang from the front area of the vehicle. What has happened is the rear axle has decided to work with the stripped flange again and I assume I've had some wind up with something some where going bang in the front. So I decide to remove the rear axle completely and see how it drives. It goes OK but when labouring the vehicle slightly in 2nd, 3rd or 4th I get clangy type noises. I think I've heard these clangs before in LR vehicles usually when off road and the drive train is loaded up and then they stop or put the clutch in
Here's what I can tell you:
- If I disengage the CDL the car will free spin as expected through the gears with no unusual noises from the gearbox.
- The unis in the front prop shaft are solid, no play at all.
- When moving forward or back the front diff will flex forward or back like the tyres are giving it too much resistance. At this point when there is strain on the front end if you dip the clutch quickly you get some clangs.
- The vehicle will do 100km/h no problems with no strange noises.
- Turning left or right doesn't seem to do anything to increase or decreases clangs.
- I drove the 150kms home and it didn't get worse.
- Vehicle is Perentie with Isuzu, LT95, Sals and whatever diff they put in the front of these.
- Vehicle has Maxidrive flanges on the front but I'm unsure of axles, I assume standard.
Anyone have an idea on what I broke?
