    3.9 V8i under water?

Am I right in saying a snorkel is only beneficial in diesel? Was going to make one but if my dizzy or coil etc get wet I'm in the creek without a running disco?

    No.

If i had a snorkel a few years ago, I'd still have my original engine & not 1/2 a conrod on my grille as a momento .

Depends whether you want a Disco that won't run because it has sucked in a heap of water, hydraulic locked and bent 8 rods ... (a bit of an exageration, but worst case scenario) or a Disco that won't run because you need to get your wifes travel hair drier out of the boot and dry the dizzy ... you can actually get water proof distributers etc, they use them in mud racing or you could seal yours up, Really depends what you want to use the car for, snorkels not only help with water, but also dust ingress.

you wouldnt be wasting your time at all..

to start with the cooler and cleaner air will do wonders for the engine.

secondly if the engine stops electically its a lot easier to get going than one thats stopped from ingesting water.

the v8 can be made to run underwater for short periods with loads of preperation.

As said a snorkel on a V8 can still save your engine. You can do lot of other things to help your V8 cope with water crossings. Use good quality leads, make a water deflector in front of the dissy to stop water blowing in from the fan, move the coil up behind the air box. Some people silicon the dissy cap but hard to remove for service. You can get some grease to resist water getting in. If you know your doing a long crossing use a water bra.

Having said all this I have still come out the other side of deep crossing running on 3 cylinder. It usually clears after a bit of a run or with the help of some WD40. At worst you may have to let things dry out a bit but the engine internals are unharmed.

So yes a snorkel will help to save your engine. I have done plenty of deep crossings and the engine is still going strong. A shame about the rest of the car though.
    Cheers, David.

Ok great. Thanks for all the replays. Snorkel and water shield between dizzy and fan. I'll do this, also moving coil is great idea (maybe even make housing) got brand new leads so should be ok. I plan to go through anything it can, I plan to push her to her limits (not good idea but meh) I'll post pics of snorkel once made and fitted

after a deep enough crossing, you will find out what typical disco door seals are like! then you might steer clear if possible

Yes this is another problem, I've had water floating around my ankles before. Since this I have gotten out the silicon gun and pumped it down the rubber tube around the gaps of the seal and smoothed them over. I also spent a bit of time filling the torn bits and molding them into shape. It seals up pretty good now and take a while for water to get in.

Also extend your Diff and Transfer case breather before jumping in to deep.

    V8i & water...

    * Raised Air Intake & use silicone to seal all hoses & air box.
    * Extend breathers.

As for silicone on the dizzy... Don't use a silicone sealant, use a thick spray on silicone grease. It will also work on other electrical connections.

If you want to go the whole hog, you can actually get a completely waterproof military spec dizzy.

Take the air box out to seal, as there loads of perforated holes to fill ... Sikaflex is a good sealant .... non hardening & flexible
