the destruction that allows thrust bearing to meet fork is the collapsing of the thrust bearing carrier, usually accelerated by riding the clutch and poor hydraulics adjustment.

The cause of the flex plate getting lunched out like that is dropping the clutch too agressively, a worn spigot bearing and worn input shaft bearings.

The clutch is not rated to take up at full power. you could very easily tear apart a clutch with just 10-20KW if you applied it roughly enough often enough.

no pitfalls that i have ever experianced, go overseas, always cheaper. I always go through DLS spares on ebay, never had a problem with any of thier service, always good quality and fast cheap shipping

    missed the pitfalls questions.

    1. time on delivery
    2. hassle on exchange if its wrong.
    3. lost in transit.

those 3 reasons are my main motivators for dealing almost exclusively with MR automotive as parts suppliers when Im supplying parts for a job.

    Clutch Kit Pricing

Todays task was to get prices on a clutch kit for the Defender.

Looked at local prices, both on line and on telephone .

The price of a clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing combo (some had spigot bush) varied between $249 for a Valeo Kit (Valeo RV801991) and an Exedy HD kit at $515. With plenty of variation in between.
Heck of a variation even for the 'non HD' versions. Though I am a bit sceptical of the term HD as it can mean whatever the vendor wants it to mean.
The non HD kits varied in price between $249 and $418.

Are there any really crap brands to look out for here ? Valeo is an OEM supplier so I would have thought OK and at $249 the cheapest also.

Don't choose Exedy. Full stop... and take the opportunity to replace the clutch fork!

Exedy have a good rep as far as I can tell, what's the problem with them ?

As you can see from the pics. the fork is a bit battered but on the non load side, was going to replace it anyway.

My experience with Excedy is not good.
IMO they are popular amongst " boy racer" types and have gained a better rep than their product actually deserves. A new unit on my VR4 Mitsi was average in quality, rattled and was quickly replaced with another OEM unit.

    Cheers
