Jump Starter pack as dual battery system.

Over the last two weekends I have used a 12V 1900 amp Jump Starter (booster) pack to run my Engel fridge.

The first weekend the pack was used with a cigarette/power plug recharger lead into the OEM rear socket in the D4 and this weekend just sitting in my No.5 trailer for a military display. On Sunday, the pack even still had sufficient power to jump start one of the SIII Land Rovers present.

How reliable would the system be using the D4 setup described above?

How long would I expect the pack to last before being exhausted and need a full mains re-charge?

BTW: I'm not expecting it to be as efficient as any of the dedicated dual battery systems, but a cheaper option for the emergency power supply before a dual battery system is fitted (which ever brand I may choose) or in situations where a hard wired system is not an option, like a No.5 trailer on NATO plug.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I have used my 1200 cca equivalent for exactly what you suggest - my 1200 unit was able to power my fridge all weekend with it being on charge driving. On the meter it never got out of the green.

My 1200 unit has a 24A/hr normal lead acid battery so I am guessing your unit will have one about 30A/Hr - maybe a little more. You can work out time from there noting that unlike a deep cycle it will not like being taken down much more than say about 60%.

I also use mine to power my camper when after packing up before driving off - same when arriving so powers the 3 way on 12v for an hour or so each time - again no issues.

The reason for not using it, is as Garry has begun to mention. The type of batteries in that are not suited to long drains of low currents, but short drains of high currents. If you keep draining it, then recharging it, the life of the battery will be terrible and you'll end up spending twice as much (probably even more) on new batteries.

Good for emergencies sure. But for continual use for a fridge, it's life will be very short. A deep cycle battery will work out much cheaper in the long run.

The yellow one is much smaller - I think only about 750cca and only 17 A/Hr.

    The colour designates its power.

for short term use they are ok (5-6 hours depending on fridge duty cycle) and you have to shape the charge going to them.

we've got a dead one at work from doing just whats been described and then charging it straight from a vehicle with a 50A alternator.

    lasted 2ish months.

In this case, not as fast as a purple one would go!

Of course the power pack does tell you when to charge - the red light comes on - but it does need to be on load for it to be accurate. I do not know what state of charge when this happens - if the red light comes on when it is not being used then it has been discharged too far. I have had mine for 3 years and it is still going well - starting cars, running the fridge etc but when I do use it, I take every chance to get some some juice back into it.

The 240v charger provides 1 amp charging so I plug it into a cigarette lighter socket so I would expect the thin wires to limit to about 1 or two amps so it doesn't cook - has worked so far.

Have used my purple one off and on for about 3 years, it still jump starts the classic fine and runs my cruddy waeco for about a day and a half.

It either gets a charge by being plugged into the cig lighter for adelaide-melbourne runs, or I put it on the wall charger on a 24hour timer switch.

It was cheap and cheerful so I am amazed it still works well
