    tensioner torque

hi just changed the pulley bearing on the drive belt tensioner, my torque wrench wont torque left hand thread

how important is the torque value on this stud, i've tightened it a certain amount, how likely is it that it can be overtightened?

I have no idea what engine your drive belt tensioner is on, but a dial gauge type tension wrench is required to accurately apply tension to a belt tensioner, you cant do it with a standard "Click" type tension wrench, Regards Frank.

oops its a 300tdi. And yes all i've got is the click type torque wrench. So i've got no way of getting the pulley to torque. Is it majorly important for it to be at the correct torque for this stud?

Are you referring to the Timing belt tensioner, or the auxillary drive belt, i.e. alt, PS water pump, if the latter the adjustment is controlled by a spring and requires no adjustment. If the timing belt, the belt needs to be fitted with the drive side taut and a dial or pointer beam type torque wrench used to tension the slack side of the belt via the tensioner pulley, to 11nm (think it has been revised to 9nm). while holding to the correct torque the locking bolt needs to be tightened, much easier with 2 people, hope this helps, Regards Frank.

Frank I think he is talking about the drive belt tensioner. I assume we are talking about the bolt that holds the wheel on the tensioner body? If so I dont think you have to worry too much about torquing it up, snip it up tight as you probably already have done and it should be fine. The belt drives the wheel in the opposite direction to the thread right??

Hi, yes the auxillary drive belt, its the stud on the pulley attached to the tensioner, left hand thread and yes drives wheel in opposite direction to the thread.

Cheers guys, not so concerned now!!

As Mr. Ploppy says, just tighten it up, Regards Frank.
