    XYZ Switch Fault and Tool

I know lots has been posted about the XYZ switch before but when a searched the web I could not find any references to the fault I had so I thought I would post this to help someone diagnose theirs.

My fault was when moving to D, the indicator light on the selector did not go on and although the car would move off, it definitely was not in drive. After a couple of seconds the indicator light would come on and it would drive fine. All other indicator lights worked fine. If I tried to move the selector switch back and forward to try and get D to come on I would get the M&S lights flashing and I would have to switch off and restart to clear them.

I have not updated my nanocom so could not read the gearbox. The volts were OK (14.1 at idle) so it all pointed to the xyz switch. I saw lots of posts warning not to assume the switch so was hesitant but decided to rebuild using that great post.

When I pulled it apart there was no sign of water ingress at all, bugger. Clean as a whistle. The only thing I could see was the copper contacts on one of the banks was discoloured like it had over heated but I imagine that these carry no current at all. I decided to clean all the contacts using very fine emery and some traces of dirt were evident.

Put it together, fitted it and all is now sweet. So if those are your symptoms, suspect your XYZ switch.

Also I have not seen any reference to fine tuning the switch to the selector shaft. The Rave manual has special tool LRT-44-011 to do it. What I did was to use the selector shaft activator arm upside down, drilled a 4mm hole in the middle of the arm and fitted a 4mm bolt to it which fits in the aligning hole. The hole is in the middle of the arm and the distance from the center is established by holding the arm on the switch (nice circular pattern on switch casing to align the end of the arm) and mark the distance out through the aligning hole.

    Hope this helps someone.

When I did mine a few years ago I didn't use any special or home made alignment tools. I simply did it by trial and error - with SWMBO in the car operating the stick, I moved the switch around until I found the 'sweet' spot. Haven't had a problem since.
