question for Td5 Provent owners

Altho it is for high pressure there is no regulator or restriction in it & I can easily blow thru it. In the air line it collects condensation from the cooling air and oil that is sucked thru from the compressor sump. With the amount I use my compressor it takes about a year before it needs emptying.

I think this would do the same job as a provent and I could just unscrew the bowl & empty it when I see it is getting full.

That is far too small. It may be easy to blow through now, but it will be effectively blocked very quickly. Which will result in blown front and rear main seals, among others. The only way it would work is if you had a bunch of filter elements and cleaned/replaced them daily. (and even then you may risk failed seals).

The Provent has a valve in the cap which vents to atmosphere if crankcase pressure gets to high. It also has a valve in the outlet to block off flow from the crankcase if pressure gets to low. It is much more sophisticated than a compressed air separator.

Design pressure drop across a crankcase filter in operation is ~20 mBar. Design pressure drop across a compressed air filter in operation is 100-400 mBar.

However both only need about 2 mBar pressure to blow air through them when new.

just take one good look at the reg on your compressor and I think that will answer your questions. They leak and are sub par at their job but acceptable for running basic air tools like nail guns, impact wrenches etc. For serious painting set ups they usually use good Festo regs etc......

Ok my Provent arrived in the Mail today,
No instructions included.

A few Q's

Ive read the discussions re fitting on AULRO and am good with HOW to install it but I can't find any info on what type of Hose to use, The only hose the local Hydraulic place has that will fit is Silicon but wayy too expensive.

What type of hose is OK to use, I'm guessing the nylon reinforced vinyl stuff (below) is no good, as I have some that will fit.

And has anyone bothered to undo the clip under the inlet vent on the intake duct (TD5 Defender) and turn it around to a more convenient position. I don't want to cut & joint my hoses with elbows, I'll use straight runs if I can.

Also what is the knob on the side of the provent itself, it dosent seem to do anything when I turn it.

The hose used was from Pirtek. I used it for a few installs with no problem.

The "knob" contains a valve to seal off the outlet if intake vacuum is too high. You can unclip it (but don't need to).

I found what I think is a better place to install the provent on a Td5 Defender, possibly will fit Disco2 - , someone could confirm

I removed the rear engine hook and made a Mounting bracket for the Provent in its place. (May not fit if you use an engine cover, I also don't use the turbo cover).

Fits nicely and apart from the horrible red hose I used almost looks like a standard fitment. A good clearance all the way around , even given the amount the engine moves it won't be a drama, and very easy to undo If I have to get to the fuel reg / Crank sensor etc.

The red hose is 7/8 Oil-Diesel delivery hose from ebay for $8.00 a meter,
Don't need to use any dodgy looking elbows or reducers, if the hose works without melting I might just wrap it in black tape. Silver stuff is self adhesive Telstra heat shield used for heat protection of cables when flame shrinking raychem xaga enclosures.

I'm not going to feed the oil back into the sump, will just use the accessory drain cock to bleed it off every couple of thousand klms.

Which to do: remove the EGR or blank it off with the stainless steel thingy for $10 I saw on a thread recently?
