Hi all just a enquiring has anyone experienced this, I haven't seen this before, my 2010 Defender puma front diff oil goes black the other oils are fine i.e. rear diff, transfer case and gear box oils? I had it independently serviced again and this is what the mechanic found black oil in the front diff despite him changing it 4,500kms ago. It broke a CV joint when only 1500 to 2500kms old which was replaced under warranty. It now has 44,000 kms on it, interesting! I have checked the wheels/bearings while on a long drive and they do not appear to be hotter or over heating not sure what is going on?

The front diff of my 2009 Puma is doing exactly the same thing. I can't see that the grease will do any harm to the diff. and can't see any simple way to stop it or any real need to.
I also note that my engine oil goes black again immediately after an expensive change of oil and filter. I have used Castrol Edge oil and genuine filters and changed them every 7500km since new. My car has now done 30,000km.
The car has been fault free and marvelous, no warranty claims whatever except the recall brake drum/transfer rear seal replacement. No oil leaks, nothing. My warranty has now just run out.

You never get rid of all the old oil with an oil drain, little bit still in the sump, oil galleries, oil cooler etc..Originally Posted by Quigley
Drain your oil and use some Flushing oil then drain and refill with your good oil, if you want clean oil for a week or so till the new oil picks up enough soot to turn it black, Regards Frank.

change your front end so the cv's, wheel bearings etc run in oil....

I have just returned from a trip through central Australia covered 8,000 km in 3 weeks the Defender went great not a problem. Hundreds of kms of corrugated dirt towing a camper trailer. The front diff oil was black again on the return service. The Landie mechanic stated that Patrols do it too I’ll just keep changing it every service. My engine oil goes black quickly as well not like my old bent TDI it stays clean for about 100kms? I removed the air filter during the trip and shook the dust out of it what a pain to get back in very poor design the TDI one is way easier.
Mine hasn’t been as good as yours, other warranty issues: replaced rear door seal it lets lots of dust in especially if the sun roof is open it just sucks dust in even with the new seal. The roof lining has been replaced as the original one was sagging, the drivers door handle was falling off the screws fell out I fixed that my self as it was denting the door skin. The transfer case pops out of high range after using low range if gentle pressure is not applied to the lever on initial take off after engaging it. It had a fuel leak from a faulty breather hose; fuel was literally running out the breather, embarrassing when returning to the car after paying for fuel. Now the cigarette lighter socket is not working it fell apart when my wife used it to charge her Iphone. But what a fun car we still love it!
