The dial indicator with mag base is a yes, as is some marking paste (paint). But as to measuring pinion height - the LR way is to use a special chunk of steel ( LR tool) and the dial indicator.
Looking to set up my front diff, and have read that the pinion should have pinion height markings on it, well my h/duty Ashcroft has 0.0 marked on it. So assuming the pinion doesn't need shimming???????. As I don't have the gear to measure it just yet, I thought I'd ask first.
So I need to buy some gear, mag dial indicater, vertical vernier, and some marking paint should see me out???

It's an offset measurement from the factory jig, that incorporates carrier bearing centerline, the factory jig and a known spacer, still requires shimming to the correct height
Will need a dolly to fit in the carrier, a block machined to the correct height, feeler gauges, an array of pinion shims. Then a spring balance and an array of pinion bearing preload shims, for pinion preload after setting height
Then a mag based dial indicater for backlash and make a c spanner for carrier bearing preload, bearing blue or similar to check contact patch
Remember to leave pinion seal out to do pinion bearing preload and buy good pinion seal from rover type person with multiple lips
got all the shims etc, was going to get a inch/pound torque wrench for the preload. remember reading somewhere that Ian Ashcroft said to just use a vertical vernier to do the pinion height??
Now that's my idea of a good time!
Anyway, this might help:
Dingocroft Other tools
Look for: LRT-54-503. Except I notice that it's very expensive. It does list the various heights, though.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
hmmm, did the math, think i'll just pay to get it done, and go to work instead.![]()
thanks Brian, but i'll be after cheap but works ok kind of gear, unless they are cheap?![]()
