    Question Differential Noise

I have a 2007 Disco3 that has recently started to make a whining noise at approx 64kph and 95kph. Landrover have advised that the oil is burned and that the diffs need to be replaced.

The vehicle has done 144,000km, 95% of which is on road.

Has anyone had this problem before with a car of this age?

Would simply changing the oil be the first logical step to resolving the issue?

If not would a slightly more viscous oil do the trick?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Changing the oil would remove some of the debris from the diff , if the tech's have already said the diffs need replacing then I would check my service book & service centre to find out when the oil was replaced previously & what oil was used . A properly maintained vehicle should last a lot longer than that. Yes a thicker viscousity oil may help now that your diff has excess clearances.

I have seen a two 05/06s with noise which was caused by bearing failure.
I took a sample of the oil and sent it off only to get a thumbs down that both diffs were going south! (For me & undercar visual, there was "sparklies" in the oil!)

In each case the owners gave the local dealer an earful and they were replaced under a warranty. I can't say if it was an extended one or LR campaign)
    Not a cheap job!

2007 means it's out of warranty? Check your maintenance schedule against the service history: somebody didn't do the diff lubricant change as specified.
