Taking the roof off a new 90?

Ok some interesting answers on here

Don't know why you would need a new fire wall

Any way my 90 was a hard top when I bought it and I do have a roof for it in my garage if I ever want to turn it into a hard top. And my 90 is a 1985 and it does not have the hinges on the windscreen and does not matter if you have ever driven a car with the windscreen down it is not pleasant at speed.

There are just very few bolts holding the roof on and a lot of silicon.

First just look there is 4 long bolts in each corner in the back and behind the driver . One each corner each side of the rear door , and one each side beside / behind the driver and passenger. Then there is a row of bolts on the top of the windscreen. These is what holds the roof to the screen. Once you have taken off the back door and undone these the roof( with the help of a knife to cut the silicon) will lift off . Not too heavy I have lifted one but myself but need two of you to move it off. There is no difference between the new defenders and the old ones just a lot of plastic capping over the top to make them look pretty. Land Rover are lazy and will not change anything unless they really have to.

They have everything you need , the bar for the top of the screen , all the bars and bit across the top of the doors ,even the military style protection bar. But this is more important for the seat belt mount rather than for protection if you roll.

As for ADR it never got mentioned when I bought mine into Australia and it was checked and checked again by all sort of organisations.

I have a few mates in the uk that have done it to a few pumas so your not the first

Anything manufactured before Jan 1st 1989 is fine to import, regardless if its a hard top or soft top, anything thats got a made before jan 1st 1989 stamp on is may also be fine;)

As for RAWS good look, they may want you to spend 20k plus crash testing a soft top 90 so it complies with ADR.

I would be bringing in a pre 89 fully converted from the UK to SVX spec etc..... simple as that...

So how did my 1995 90 pass the compliance test and ADR test to drive on Australian roads then.

So i am driving an illegally car then , according to your comment.

Did it need to have a roll bar? Is yours 4 seats?

For those following I have stumbled across a repairable write off 2010, and I'm considering starting with that.

Although it does appear the wrecker may have overpaid a little at around $17k as is, and around $12k for parts to repair, plus labour.??

Will do the numbers and see it it stacks up. It might at least justify some more creative modifications along the way.

On another note I have been reading on here about child seat restraints, but they seem to refer to 110's mainly, does anyone know the options for a four seat 90?

Could it be front seat mounted like a two seater ute?

I don't have a roll bar I just have a roll protection bar. Not the same thing. More to hold the seat belts.

Don't talk to me about rear seats. It did have genuine rear seats in the back but I took them out 4 weeks before I sent it over here after making the mistake of beliving people on here about there knowledge of the ADR system. ( of which I have found since they don't know anything about) I should have kept them in the car as I now need to buy some for the back of the 90 to replace the ones I took out.


As for kid seats in the 90 I am at the moment looking into it myself.
