for spur gears you would be correct, for helical cut gears it gives you more contact patches, Same basic theory of fine pitch threads giving better hold than coarse pitch threads.
The drawback of the finer tooth gears is their tolerance for wear and damage is a lot lower.
Turns out it was'nt the TC leaking again it is a small leak from the rear of the trans which hopefully will be done when I get it serviced in a couple of weeks.Still at some stage soon want to do the CDL install. Thanks to all for replies gives me more options,
appreciate it

If you fit the D1 transfer case to the D2, does it throw faults because it doesn't have the range switch in it, and which throttle map do you end up getting?
Sharkee. If I read you correctly you are putting in the D1 Tcase for the CDL. If so all D2's have the CDL they just did not fit the lever and linkages. They thought the electronic gizmo's would be good enough. People complained so they put them back after a year or so. There are a number of after market addons to activate it if you look on the web. The fine gears were to quieten the Tcase and are designated by a Q after LT230.
