    Series Overdrive Wear

    G'day all,

Just picked up a Toro overdrive. I have no idea what level or wear is good/normal/acceptable, so was hoping someone could provide advice.

Attached are photos of the clutch sleeve and main gear thingy. I'm planning on pulling it apart and replacing all bearings and seals and cleaning it up, so will post more when that happens.

    Cheers,

    Aleksei

What is the wear patern on the inside of the large gear that the clutch sleeve roller bearings run on (3rd Pic.) like, this area usually has chatter marks from the needle rollers, if so it will be noisy and will cause wear of the clutch sleeve splines/teeth, Regards Frank.

    G'day Frank,

I think this is what you're talking about? Looks as though some mud has got in there at some point.

Aleksei, that's the part and it looks like it has chatter marks around the surface that the clutch sleeve runs on. Wear in this area causes wear on the clutch sleeve and eventual failure, that's why most Overdrive owners carry the original gears with them for when (not if) it fails. At least if you have the original gears you could remove the O/D reinstall the original gears and your mobile again. That is rust, this area of the gearset doesn't get enough oil, most are packed with grease, good luck, you will need it, Regards Frank.

    Hi Frank,

I've heard that carrying the spare gear and backing plate is a must. What's the remedy for this kind of thing (if there is one)? Worth getting the surface machined to remove the chatter marks and see if somewhere can put new rollers on the clutch sleeve?

    Cheers,

    Aleksei

The cost of machining and other remedial ideas would be more than buying a new part, there's a mob in America that sells new parts, JDNSW on this forum would know their name, something like Down South, or Google L/R Overdrive parts. you could also pack that area with H/D grease and carry the original gears and plate around with you, good luck, Regards Frank.

Rovers Down South in New Orleans were making parts for the Fairey O/Ds, but I believe they have ceased production now. I am not aware of anyone who make parts for the Toro though. If there is sufficient material there, it may be possible to bore out the part and fit a new sleeve in. I would take it to a good engineering shop and see what they suggest.

    Cheers, Mick.

I took mine to a good machine shop and because the surface is sooo... hard where the bearings contact it would have to be ground out and any sleeve would have to be as hard and it would be a problem to press in as it would be brittle and it would need to be pinned, the cost of this procedure would have paid for a nice new 5 speed O/D gearbox, get in touch with Rover Down South and see if they can help, Regards Frank.

Zenith engineering in Brisbane has resplined many, many Fairey and Toro drive gears over the years.

They use a coarse spline close to the Toro, rather than the firey which is too fine.

That one looks OK though - clean it up well, use good quality oil and make sure the t-case and OD stay topped up.

I am talking about the bearing surface on the inside of the main gear/shaft which either needs to be repaired or replaced, cost of machine shop work makes it cheaper to buy a new shaft, regards frank.
