Wrong oil D2 transfercase.

The problem is that an 80 or 85W-90 is no thicker at 100*C than a 75W-90, but an 85W-90 is like treacle at start up in winter up here and Syntrax will protect better at high temps (which is something the t/case suffers from) than a lot of mineral based oils.
BTW, above 100*C the Syntax will maintain it's viscosity better than nearly any mineral oil.

If you want to go thicker a 75W-110 would be great, but is as rare as rocking horse manure in Australia, mores the pity, it's a great viscosity.
I think Penrite make one, and any of the US based blenders, (eg Lubrication Engineers, who blend exceptionally good gear oils, mineral and synthetic) probably do too.

Rick, I think the Penrite 75w/110 is still a mineral based oil so wouldn't the full synthetic 75w/90 still be better for heat and longevity in the lt230? Edit; Just checked and it is a 85w/110

If it's the one I think it is, it's a really, really good oil and can mimic a syn in the temps it can handle.

There are a couple of mineral oils that are better than a lot of syn oils, it all comes down to the blending and additives used, eg Caltex have a range of mineral based oils that use their Group II+ mineral base oils and a borate ester additive package that I've been told by another blender/tribologist are bloody brilliant oils.
Lubrication Engineers are another company that make brilliant, mineral based oils too.

The tcase will deal with everything from DEXIII - 80/90 and engine oil.

Its the application you put it to with the oil thats in it that counts.

The syntrans is a good allrounder.

D2 TD5 2001 Auto - I have searched and I am still confused I recently fitted a CDL assembly to the Transfer Case, checked the spec for the oil.
Texaco Multi-Gear 75W90R GL5
Castrol Syntec Fully Synthetic 75W90R GL5
I checked the Penrite site and purchased the Trans Gear 75W90 Semi Synthetic. It seems very thin compared to the EP mineral oils? are the synthetic and semi synthetic oils much thinner?
The boy has a Disco 1 Tdi 200 we have always used EP 80/90 Hypoid Oils for the T/Case and Diffs should we carry on with the mineral oil or can these be changed to semi synthetic Penrite Trans Gear 75W90 GL5?
