Engine oil can be substituted for power-steering fluid.. Indeed a major repair specialist over here ONLY uses light grade engine oil in the PS. His rule of thumb is a grade same or lighter than what is used for the engine.
But I'd only use diesel in a matter of life or death, and would treat the diesel-filled component as a possible 'throw-a-way' afterwards.
Carry more oil(s) and lots of chewing gum.....:p
As someone who suffered catastrophic fluid loss from auto transmission 100kms south of Birdsville ...
Fixed the leak ... cooler hose ... I carried 2 litres ATF, and someone else had a litre, but still not on the dip stick, so trailered vehicle into Birdsville and bought the LAST 5l of ATF in either servo.
Next time I'll carry my own 5l, just in case!
And anyone depending on Birdsville servos for oils ... don't!
