Thread: Fuel hose spec

I have recently replace My P38a Thor fuel pump with a generic version. ( see the p38 section) I had to install an in-line fuel filter along with the pump in the tank. I used standard EFI SAE30R6 rubber reinforced fuel hose to make the circuit, sold to me by Auto One as suitable. I have since been informed that the Standard type efi hose will degrade and burst rapidly if submerged in the fuel. A bit of searching confirms this is correct and a hose with a spec of SAE30R10 is required. This hose is very hard to come by and 15 to 20 times more expensive than the standard 5/16 EFI rubber fuel hose. After several hours online trying to find a local supplier I found Pirtek could get me 500mm for $28. After getting confirmation on the spec and use with them they asked why I wanted such expensive hose. They said they had a reinforced plastic fuel hose with a 200psi rating that would not be degraded if submerged in unleaded fuel. This was only A$2.75 a meter, am I missing something here, I trust the guys at Pirtek know their stuff so is this another way the car industry can fleece us for a few more $$$ or is there something else I don't know?

I Changed the Sae30R6 rubber hose to the Pirtek recommended. It could be old school fuel hose but I think it might be something better. The only old type piece I could compare looks a solid uniform material across the section. The Pirtek hose has a definite inner and outer material.
To get the pump out and back in again and change the hoses took 20mins so I am willing to give it a chance whilst keeping a length of hose in the car at all times. The SAE3R06 which had only been in the tank for 4 days had already softened so thanks again bee utey for the heads up
