Somewhere inside the engine mate... try turning the crankshaft pulley first, see what gives. It could be almost anything. If the engine is locked solid start pulling off front covers, heads, sump etc until you find the offending part.
Hi All,
I am going to look at a range rover classic which i am hoping to pick up as a parts car.
The range rover I am going to look at hasn't moved in about a year and a half.
It has the 3.9 v8 with auto box and it will not start. The owner has told me that it developed a very loud tapping/knocking sound which he kept driving with for some time before it abruptly lost power under load and would not start again and has not been driven since. Unfortunately he cannot remember if the oil light came on and did not take the time to try and locate the source of the noise while it was still running.
I have gotten my hands on the RAVE CD which suggests a faulty big end bearing but from researching the internet it looks like there is a lot more possibilities ie. valve train, timing chain...
What I would like to ask you guys for is a list/suggestions of things I can look at to try and work out what the cause of this dead car is.
Cheers,
Craig

Well the first thing you should do is take off the sump and have a look. What I would like to ask you guys for is a list/suggestions of things I can look

That will tell you if the crank has broken in half , or a big end died, by the carnage or lack of. First maybe see if the engine turns by putting a spanner on the crank nut and turning it over and seeing what you see or hear.
If there is no carnage there you know that it is something less expensive like a broken timing chain, or whatever.
IMHo, with car that doen't go for unknown reasons , you could be stuffing around for days doing all sorts of tests and we really can't be much help.

Taking off the sump is about as far as I want to go with this, otherwise I will be in a drive way pulling apart a car I don't even own yet.
I just told my mate who owns the car I will have a quick look and see if I cant find what wrong with it so he may be able to sell the engine. But by the sounds of things it is already a lost cause without time and money to throw at the thing.
Craig
I would walk away and look for something that works, I wouldn't touch this car with a barge pole after the description you gave of how the owner treated this vehicle, if he neglected the engine what's to say the rest of the mechanicals are close to the same condition as the engine, look elsewhere, save some grief, regards Frank.
