No nothing to do with the belt too tight if it was it wouldnt have lasted 60000 ks:cool: , It simply was the old syle tensioner with plastic letting go

Just out of curiosity, I have a 100k on my '97 Disco and have no clue if anyone ever touched the timing belt. Per Haynes manual it should have been replaced long time ago. Should I endeavor the replacement?
I just read somewhere that "if your timing case isn’t full of black fluff, you don’t need to worry."
What do you recon?
I'd be doing it, just for the peace of mind.
In Europe they can get away with 115,000km belt changes if the car is never used off road and thanks to the mild climate. (Central/Northern Europe anyway)
For most of Australia and definitely for Indonesia, our conditions (dust) and your humidity during the wet season would be considered extreme in a Land rover engineers eyes, so they reduce the recommended belt change interval to around 60-80,000km. (although I've taken two out to 100,000+km with no problems so far and the belts looked new, but it's pushing it going on others experience)
These instructions are better than the Haynes manual and use the revised belt tension specs.

I would look at getting the injector pump shimmed, so the belt runs true. The upgraded heavy duty guides on the pulley is only a fail safe, if the belt runs true it shouldn't need them.
My last belt had damage at 45,000k and I could see the damage through the wading plug hole. There was not much fluff visible from the wading plug hole as most of it sticks to the inside of the timing case higher up so you can't always use that as an indicator. I used a small globe to inspect the belt while slowly winding the crank pulley, but i'll probably pick up one of those cheap usb 10mm micro camera's when I check it next.
In your case I'd be whipping off the timing cover to make sure the solid lipped crank gear is there in any case.
