Thread: Which Land rovers have 4t towing?

Come on fella's!!! Why would you want to hang anything within the ballpark of 4 ton of the back of any light vehicle??? I have a 23ft dual axle van with tare of 2180 kg's and believe me it is very noticeable and I would not want to tow anything larger or heavier. This point of view is from a touring on open road scenario. What a vehicle is rated to tow and what it can tow safely is another story.

Series 2a Handbook(1964) - 1600 -1800kg depending on model.

Series 3 handbook(1978) - Trailer with four wheels and independent power brakes; Petrol 4080kg, Diesel 3060kg

So some Series vehicles are under 2T, some over 4T (difficult to see what changed!).

Only the very last of Series 3 if indeed even them (and no earlier Series) will have a data plate with towing weights, and tags on towbars post date all Series Landrovers - came in about 1990 I believe.

Yes - but the S3 book does not differentiate between 88 and 109! But you are possibly right.

my arb trailboss hitch rating is 250kg downforce, 3500kg to suit a 110. the uprated ball weight version of this bar has only 2 small angle tags behind the channel to pick up 2 pre existing holes on the inside edge of the rear crossmember, the 175 kg version doesn't.

i couldn't find a new 4000kg hitch for sale anywhere through arb or hayman reece to suit.

i have an engineer who will uprate and plate it if i show him in black and white the factory blurb on 4t with coupled brakes etc, and even increase my allowable ball weight to 350kg like cruisers are rated for with their much smaller rear chassis, as i have fitted the larger diameter originally fitted 12.9 capscrews to the hitch fixings than what came in the kit.

But do you really want to tow 4t........

why not, I've used fozz to move empty 8t Trailers around on the flat. (3.98T)

you dont have to have the requirement to go far, fast or often but if you have to do it (say short move a bobcat on a trailer) and you have to do it legally then you have to have the 4t tow option.

Ok handbook says 4000 max provided that above 3500kg there is a coupled braking system compatible with LR ABS Braking systems and the increased total train weight is noted as an amendment to the VIN. Mine has no ABS so electric brakes would simply be required as I see it. Book says amended Vin is obtainable from LR on inspection of an approved coupled brake systemic as I see it stock electric breakaway brakes. No mention of special tow kits or coolers etc., You still can't exceed gross max. And max towball down weight is 150 which in a practical sense is limiting.
