    Angry Help please

    Hi all
    I have a 96 D1 with a 3.9 auto that won't start !
Seems to be a no spark problem
After coping much **** from family who drive Landcrusiers
me and the misses spent good money doing the Disco up
We all went away last weekend hoping to prove that the little Disco could hold its own or even show up the Cruiser how ever we ened up being towed home by it
I have replaced the factory module on the rad support and had the alarm looked checked by a machnic who said it was fine yet still no spark
When the key is turned on the coil throws a spark but won't while cranking (battery fully charged)
I was told to run jump wires off the batt straight to the coil still no go
Plz help so I can get that Landcruiser back

    Question

I have had much the same issue off and on over the years with my 3.9V8 D1.
I did the spider mod up in the dash behind the radio. It seemed to work but problem came back several months later.
Quite often as you said just a hot wire direct from batt to coil usually worked but not always. (I have a permanent toggle switch set up to use when it plays up).
Sometimes just resetting the alarm/security fixes the problem. But not always.
I replaced the coil ignition module per suggestions on this forum. Improved things but still the odd "it wont fire" gremlin persits.
Sometimes just earthing the motor (using jumper lead) works but as you guessed not always.
My favorite and it works 99% of the time is to crank it in gear (usually to move it off a roadway or similar) and whilst cranking it nearly always fires.
I have numerous LR gurus look at it but it never does it when I need it too!
The gurus believe it is something in the alarm/security system with a bad earth somewhere but bugga me I have never been able to find it.
I have learnt to live with it!
Twice I have called a tow truck and bugga me I always get it to fire before the truck turns up.
I am not on gas like most v8 owners so one less thing to go wrong.

Guess I have not been of any help but at least I got to vent my frustration as well. I had to get towed by a tojo when my gremlin appeared whilst conquering some obstacles at loveday. Got it fixed using combo of above tricks and then had to go rescue the tojo when he got his leaf springs caught up. "God was watching".

    Cheers

I had a similar problem with my 98 EFI. Intermittent over months and drove me mad!
Not sure if you have the same dizzy, but I think it is. Mine turned out to be the pick up and base plate, p/n STC2898, inside the dizzy. I had tried all the other suggested "fixes", and it wasn't until it failed altogether that I tried another dizzy, which lead to proving the base plate pick up was the problem.

I've seen intermittent coils, what size spark can you pull from the coil? Insert a split pin or similar in the coil top and arrange a 10mm gap to the body. You should get a regular fat spark with that size gap.

Sometimes a rotor button burns through, the coil sparks but the rotor button shorts it out. You can use a GB864 rotor button from an XF Falcon carby vehicle if you can't get a correct rotor button in your location.

rotor buttons it's best to ensure you replace it with a GENUINE part, the bosh ones seem to be ok for a short while only

Not sure why the mechanic could not resolve it .... It's all basic multi meter testing ... "Light globe on prod" works well also

Basically, you have a power source feed line problem .... A good Auto sparkie should be able to sort it out blindfolded.

    Multimeter time ......
Have you checked for the voltage numbers of the + power feed at the coil??
Anything that records as 1 volt less than the battery voltage = resistance ... (bad connection / line)
(Record the actual battery volts >>> then the other parts to compare voltage drop)

Have a look at the condition of the plugs ... and add a couple of extra body / chassis / motor earth leads

Have a good look at the main positive feed line from the battery to the actual stater motor .... Find and follow all the earth leads.

Could also blame the ignition barrel itself ..

    happy hunting

    Cheers
    Mike

    Thanx mike
Well put a test light and multi meter on the coil + side and got no power at all now ???
It did throw a spark as I said but now she won't even do that
The machanic that looked at it was a RACV bloke talking to a LR mate of his on his phone
Why would I not be getting power to the coil ?

check for bad earths, my rr had a cluster of earths on the bottom of the bell housing, the bolt was tight but the earths were slightly loose, had a few mechanics tell me I had a buggered ecu untill one day I was under looking at the exhust when it would start, went back over where I had been and found them. It had been a problem off and on fpr 12 months
    cheers
