(i haven't check the whole thread, so sorry if I'm doubling up here)

maybe a call to the insurance company you already have, see what their stance is, beyond that something in writing and his details (photo of truck and registration etc) to make sure you see the fender again!

maybe your policy had some allowance for towing? you might get the first 150km (or whatever) on insurance?

Don't do it on cash, get all the details correct, ABN etc and if it an option, you could ride back with him, and sleep in the fender when needed. Put the family on a nice aircon coach and come out smelling of roses, figuratively...

ring YOUR insurance company... ask them.

get the truck driver to provide a quote for the job, have the insurance company issue a cover note, if you have private health insurance do the same with them.

have the vehicle and gear prepped for towing to a loading ramp and have a means of getting it onboard ready to go.

In theory, I can leave the country again to the next cheapest country and come back, that's assuming that immigration don't take it into their heads to not let me back in, but even with the cheapest flights, the bills are adding up at this stage. But no, I'm not *totally* screwed if I get near the expiry date again - I have options.

Heh, you'd think, right? I rang them before Christmas, explained the situation. Guy actually laughed at me on the phone, wished me "good luck with that" and hung up. Needless to say I will be changing policies.

The reason I said that is a lot of truckies will take a quick consignment load if it comes pre-insured. I know I used to get authorisation to if I was pulling an empty or low budget opportunity load.

RAC Might do a one off for you.

Sorry - didn't mean for my response to sound as snarly as it did - just not happy with my insurance company at the moment.

Making headway at the moment anyway. Found us a rental campervan that needs relocating to Melbourne, so that's our own transport covered. So the plan is to put everything from the defender inside (including the rooftent and maybe roofrack ) and hopefully we'll get a transport company that will take the empty defender.

However, now we're meeting the "if it's not running perfectly we're going to charge you two or three times as much" response - seems there's always someone trying to squeeze the past dollar out of it. CAlled over to Strangy's yesterday, she's starting at least, though the engine feels like it's going to launch itself out of the engine bay at any minute. But I reckon she'll have enough in her in low range to get her up the truck ramp and back down....

If the roof rack wont fit in just run the angle grinder down the middle
I'm serious - wont be a problem to put it back together again once in Melbourne and much better than having to fork out hundreds to replace it.
