when I did mine, I didnt use any gloop on either of the gaskets, I just loctited the studs and used high temp antiseize on the manifold nuts

I always put a thin smear of ultrablue on both sides of the rocker cover gasket, stops any weeping

I don't use anything on the rocker cover makes for a pain to do valve clearances. And use permatex non hardening sealer on the intake gasket and I would replace the studs/nuts if in doubt

    Rocker cover gasket td5

I don't mean to hi jack this thread, but could someone PLEASE tell me how to put my rocker cover back on. I can't see how I can get the back bit to sit down with the little drop down rubber piece. Has a stupid sound deadening shroud on the rear of the engine which makes things hard.
Also how do I get the new rubber gasket to stay in the groove on the cover.
I have been at it for hours.
    Should not be this hard!
By the way it is a TD5.
Hope to hear from someone who has the answers. Thanks in anticipation Nick ( worane)

Check the use by date on sealants! I had problems with a well know RTV sealant not curing causing leaks. Rang supplier who informed me RTV and alike have finite use by dates.

I used hylomar blue or red, the stuff never sets, on the rocker cover gaskets.

A little copper ease on the bolts and a toque them to 8nm.

With the cover and gasket completely clean and oil free, set the gasket into the cover using silicone / RTV etc. Once the RTV sets it the gasket is basically captive in the cover, meaning it won't fall out when you are installing the cover. You can use a not too sticky sealant like Hylomar on the joining face of the gasket / head. When you take the cover off in the future, the gasket should stay in place as the Hylomar is not as aggressive as the RTV. The cover gasket can be used like this as many as 5 times I think is the guideline.

A few drops of super glue along the seal lines will happily hold a rubber rocker cover gasket in place ready for lowering on to the head. Quick, too.
