Strange rattle from TD5 when on boost

    Hi All

My D2 Td5 manual, seems to have developed a strange rattle just as it approaches boost at 2200rpm. The odd thing is though, that it only does it when in gear, so when the car is not in gear and you rev the engine it's fine. So something tells me it could be drive train related.

It does it in every gear as the engine rpm approaches 2200rpm and then it continues to about 2600rpm then fades away. The rattle sounds like metal on metal contact, but it is very hard for me to track down as you need to be driving it to hear it. I have replaced the center muffler with a straight pipe about 6months ago, but the rattle only came about 2 months ago, so I think I can rule that out.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?
I will post a video up tonight, which might give a better indication of what I am trying to solve.

I had something similar. It turned out to be the screw part of the hose clamp on the intercooler end of the pipe from the turbo hitting the inner guard.

It's possibly exacerbated by an engine mount on the way out, as seems to be related to the engine rotating slightly on the mounts under load. With the transmission in neutral the engine is unloaded so you don't get the same effect.

    cheers

Thanks for that, the engine mounts are a very valid point. They have never been replaced and the car is approaching 300k kms and they have been collapsed for a while now. I think it might be time for a new pair anyways.

You said you have replaced the centre muffler but does it still have a cat fitted.
Could be the insides of the cat collapsing?

My td5 is an EU2 one, so it doesn't have a CAT.
