Drum axles are ~15 mm longer than disc axles.
You can fit them into a defender, you just need longer bolts and spacers under the drive flange.
EDIT - pretty sure the CVs are stock AEU 2522s.
Gday
I just bought myself a 1990 County
It has disc front, drum rear. It also has a new set of Ashcroft axles and flanges fitted. I'm not sure but I think it also has H/D CVs fitted
I have a set of Defender diffs (disc front and rear) to fit.
Can anyone tell me if the axles are the same length please? So I can swap the good axles into the Defender diffs
Thanks

Front county axles may still have 10 spline on diff end and 23 spline cv end, could have been upgraded to 24/23 spline, defender should be 24/32.
The county cv(23 spline) is 20mm longer than defender.
The county drive flange bolts are 10mm,the defender are 3/8 unf
The county stub axles have a bronze bush in the stub axle.
Jim.
Reckon I may just get the right ones to suit the Defender diffs and sell the County ones complete.
It may work out easier than chopping and changing
Thanks anyway
Why not have a look to see what axles and cv's are in the county, what the diff centre is,what the swivel housings are like? The county swivel housings will bolt to the defender diff housing, use the defender disc calipers and buy new vented discs to suit
jim.
why would you change what is in the county? Im pretty sure it has the longer stub axles, which means you wheel bearings are further apart = better. You have the strongets rover front end also. Only down side is the drum rear.....but is it really a problem?
what I would like to know, is if it is possible to "bolt on" swap/change a modern disc brake Tdi/Td5 defender Sals and front to older wider stub axles and hubs?
The rear sals will already have the disc caliper bracket, but the hub wont work. A drum hub wont work either...stub axle should swap so no problem there....and axle shafts would just need to be the longer type
Front, will the older stub axle bolt straight up to the swivel housing? I guess the older hub should be good to go. Then just the output side of the cv to be sorted??
The front is just a matter of swapping stubs, hubs and possibly also calipers.
The rear is a different matter. Using bolt-on/LR parts there are a couple of ways to do it using perentie parts (I sold an RSFV rear disc hub to Bearman a while back - but only had one) or 200tdi changeover parts (AFAIK there was a short period with wide bearings and discs).
