    Chrome plating

I have to get this hand rail plated but it is badly pitted.
A&P Chrome in Bendigo do a 2 pack chrome with which pitting can be filled.
Has anyone had any experience with this method?
Does anyone in QLD do it?
    Any other ideas?.

The only chrome plating people I've dealt with are Pioneer Plating now in Moorebank Sydney.

Could you build up the pitting with weld and linish it back? Alternatively what about replacing the rail with polished marine grade stainless? (Yes I understant it would not be original and Betty whould not have had her hand on the rail, but the chrome Betty could have touched has long gone.)

Maybe it was Betty's touch that caused the pitting?

There is not a lot of this that is original anyway so does not matter too much. I was going to do the actual hand rail in SS rod as you suggest. This is not shown but sits on top of the uprights. The uprights I could do in SS rod too but the D shape or half round of the base is a bit hard to replicate. As you say I could weld it up and linish off.

A bit left wing but get in contact with Grand Tourer Restorations in Melbourne. They use a mob that does the GTHO/GT etc bumpers and to say the are amazingly clean and smooth is an understatement. They do copper plate them (with a few other things) and linish back to smooth before plating them in about a 7-10 step process.

I had some done from a toyota crown and need to have the rest redone as they stand out so much.

AA Vinney's in Dandenong. They've just rechromed a rear bumper for my Triumph Spitfire, one I brought from the UK. It turned out to be very heavily pitted, so they've built it back up with copper, the finish is

Looking at all the stuff piled up in the warehouse they obviously do mail order. Worth a phone call IMO.

With plastic bumpers the need for bumper bar reconditioning is probably going the way of the specialist restoration trade.

Years ago when they still had metal in the bumpers, the one I did had plastic/rubber ends but the middle bit was metal, I looked in the yellow pages and found a bumper bar re conditioner/chrome shop and went around to get a change over. If the bumper was not overly popular they would recondition yours and you had to wait a couple of days.

Pitted or not they have to apply a copper coat to get the chrome to stick better (that sounds wrong). Filling with anything conductive should be fine, easiest would be solder if you can generate enough heat to get it to stick. otherwise as said earlier try a welder although arc welds are very hard and therefore more difficult to sand/linish back flat. Restoration place will most likely do it all for you anyway, probably with copper as said earlier.

Here is one up in QLD, your up further north than Brisbane I think??

Thanks Slug Burner I will give them a ring.
I took the bits into a mob at Kunda Park on the Sunshine Coast this week and they said they could not do them as there was too much pitting.
I was wondering if anyone had used A&P Chrome in Bendigo as their method can chrome anything including plastics so easier to bog and sand than melt in lead or weld etc.
Its called a durable chrome spray they cover with a UV resistant finish.

Go with the full proper job. The pits need to be really bad before they lead wipe them but thats part of the job. They'll let you know when they get it.
