Puma oil filter leak
Puma with 75,000kms. Have been doing intermediate oil and filter changes, so the oil is changed every 10,000kms. The last 2 oil changes (one by me - the other by the local mech), the filter has begun to leak after about 6 to 7 thou kms. - 2 in a row!
I have been supplying my local mechanic with imported Brit parts (air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, brake pads etc) and have had no previous trouble with the parts. Parts in Australia are stupid expensive, and our local dealers team are terrible defender mechanics.
Is it the Brit part that causes the filter to leak? Has anyone else had the problem? Is it the way the O ring is fitted that is a problem? To me the filter seems easy to fit - but I'm getting leaks before the 10,000km is up?
Cant find a thread that dicusses this issue - so am I the only owner with this problem??

You haven't damaged the housing have you?,is it leaking from the joint or is the housing cracked from overtightning. Pat

Are they actually fitting the new Oring??? Had a transit recently where the filter was leaking and when I pulled it apart the Oring was as hard as a rock almost

Pat,
Dont think its cracked. I checked this as best I could during the last oil change. Perhaps I shold order a new housing in case there is a hairline crack I cant see??

Can't say for the the mechanic - though I reckon Ive got a good mech that would have put the new O ring in. Its so easy to do - can't see why he would not have. The oil change I did, it was changed. Think I'm going back to the idea that the plastic cover has some sort of hairline crack that I can't actually see.

Have found from past experience that with placcy, and aluminium threads LR is quite serious when it comes to torque figures.
For the filter it is 26ft lbs or 35Nm. Could well be cracked if it was done with a torque elbow rather than an actual wrench.
Not hard to check the O Ring either, just drain the filter and remove. Always good to cover them in vaseline before fitting over threads.
Bit perplexed why Ford haven't used a "spin on"??? (Maybe like TD5 it doesn't stay spun on)

RF, i actually do them up using 1 hand and a standard 1/2" drive ratchet/ socket, using my wrist only. no way can you overtighten this way unless you are Arnie....

why not source your filters from your local truck part supplier...that way you will actually get a decent brand like Donaldson , flleetgard or Man-hummel

Brit parts don't have a very good reputation on Defender2 forum U.K.
I have always used genuine filters with no problems on either of my vehicles.
