Any 12v guru's

Most common problem with this setup is the loss of sender earth. Typically the sender earths through the mounting flange to the tank and then the vehicle earth.

The 2 most common causes of the problem are

• Using a flange rubber that prevents the screws that mount the flange to the tank (these usuallly seal up really really well)
• when the tank was remounted the earthing lead has been omitted OR newer style tank mounts have been used that have the tank "floating" relative to chassis earth.

Thanks to all who replied, this is what I found.

The fuel tank wasn't earthed, so I fitted a earth strap, and the multimeter started to make some sense.

I finally got the guage to move, but I dont think it is reading correctly, but will wait till I put extra fuel in the tank and see if it registers any more on the guage.

The strange couple of things I found were that the old sender registered when I tested it as per bee-utey's step by step suggestions.

Also it wasn't until I earthed the bolt ( temperaryly) that the power wire connected to that the guage finally started to work after pulling it apart plenty of times.

I assumed the wiring and guage were working as when I earthed the power wire on its own the guage would rise and fall every time, so I guessed the wiring was not faulty.
